To start learning to drive, you’ll need a provisional driving licence. You can apply online at www.direct.gov.uk or pick up a D1 form at your local Post Office.
This licence lets you drive on public roads if someone over 21, who has had a full/clean EC/EEA licence for at least 3 years, is supervising you in lessons.
You must keep this arrangement until you pass your practical test.
Your Eyesight
Your eyesight must meet a basic standard – you should be able to read a car number plate from 20.5m. (If not, you should see an optician to fix this before driving).
Your Theory and Hazard Perception Test
You need to pass this test before taking the practical one.
Your instructor will be able to provide guidance and support if you need it.
You will follow the syllabus set by the DSA, tailored to your needs based on your experience and progress. We cover all the required skills to help you reach the high standard needed for your practical test including the 27 skills. Mock tests will be given beforehand so you know what to expect on the day!
For more information you can visit https://readytopass.campaign.gov.uk/driving-test/what-happens-during-driving-test/
Before your test starts, the examiner will ask you one question about the vehicle (SHOW ME / TELL ME) and another question (TELL ME) during the test.
You can view and download these questions from the site above. You will receive coaching on these, so don’t worry if they seem confusing right now!
